Take a three-day tour to experience this bright and buzzing megacity

Tokyo is a great introduction for first time visitors to Japan - a metropolis awash with colour and movement, day or night, always on the go and never stopping. It’s busy, crowded and noisy but at the same time is clean, efficient and modern. This three-day tour takes in most of the major highlights and allows you to get a flavour of what this megacity is all about. Combine this with a choice of day trips to see nearby ornate religious architecture, sleepy coastal towns or stunning mountain scenery.

Days 1-2: Tokyo

You will be met upon arrival at Tokyo Narita Airport; board the limousine bus to travel to your hotel, after which you are free to relax or explore the city for the rest of the day. The next day enjoy a full-day private tour around the city, led by a local guide. Flexibility has been allowed on this day, so that you can choose which sights you want to visit. Discuss with your guide the night before what you would particularly like to see. (Entrance fees for today are not included).

Day 3: Tokyo Day Trip

Spend another full day marvelling at the sights, sounds and tastes of Tokyo, or take the opportunity to go on a day trip to one of the many places of interest nearby.

You could choose to visit Nikko, the town at the entrance to the Nikko National Park, set amongst lush mountains, sparkling lakes, gurgling waterfalls, hot springs and forests filled with wild monkeys. Nikko is also the centre of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship and is home to many beautiful shrines and temples.

Alternatively, you could choose to visit the sleepy coastal town of Kamakura, popular with tourists for its wide sandy beaches and array of decorative shrines and temples. Kamakura was once the political capital of Japan, leaving behind an important cultural legacy.

Otherwise, head to sacred Mt Takao, to hike through gorgeous mountain scenery and marvel at beautiful temples.

There are also plenty of other more unusual day trip options as well, including the modern port city of Yokohama, home of one of the world’s largest Chinatowns and a Ramen Museum, dedicated to the popular noodle dish. You could also visit the 120m tall Buddha at Ushiku.

Day 4: Tokyo Departure

On your final day you take the airport limousine bus from Tokyo Shinjuku station to Narita airport for your onward/return flight.
