Finish up the tour by visiting the world’s finest example of East Javanese art at Kidal Temple and climb to see the amazing views from a volcanic crater in Bromo.
Days 1-3: Yogyakarta - Borabudur
Depart the UK for Yogyakarta. Upon arrival at the airport you will be met and transferred to the Manohara Hotel in Borabudur. Enjoy the rest of your day at your leisure. Awake before dawn and take a short walk to Borobudur Temple, a colossal structure which seems to rise out of the surrounding dense jungle and one of South East Asia’s best. Listen to the birdsong while you climb to the top of the temple to view the stunning golden sunrise. Explore the magnificence of Borobudur temple and see the beautiful wall carvings, which depict Siddhartha’s life.
On your way back to Yogyakarta, pay a visit to Pawon and Mendut temples before heading to the Sultan Palace. Here, you will see Javanese-style architecture with its joglo buildings, representing philosophy and meaning. You will also have the opportunity to visit the museum of Hamengkubuwono IX, Yogyakarta’s Sultan (1912-1988), and the water castle, supposedly the swimming pool of the royal family. The final point to visit here is Kota Gede, the town formerly used as the capital of Yogyakarta and now famous for its silver trade and handicrafts.
Day 4: Seyegan - Prambanan Temple
You will be collected from your hotel in the early morning and taken a short way to Seyegan village. Here you will start your cycle tour of the area. You may also be accompanied by friendly villagers along the way. On this tour you will see a snakeskin or salak fruit plantation; these fruits have brown scaly skin and inside are similar to lychees. You will also be shown how tofu is made and how rice is grown in the paddy fields. On your way stop to try fresh young coconut, taken straight from the tree. In the afternoon, visit Prambanan temple complex, renowned for being the finest example of historical Hindu culture in Indonesia.
Day 5: Sukuh - Solo
Head east to the beautifully ornate Sukuh Temple, built on top of a hill. Continue to Solo, the centre of Javanese culture and tradition and the least westernised city on the island. Visit Mangkunegaran Palace, with its central pavilion and interesting architectural styles, dating back to 1757.
Day 6: Malang
Most of today will be spent travelling to Malang, however you will enjoy passing the time by admiring the striking scenery of towering mountains and mystic Hindu temples along the way. Stop at Trowulan en route, once the capital of the Hindu empire in Indonesia.
Days 7-8: Bromo - Ketapang
From Malang you can explore Kidal Temple, which may be the finest example of historic East Javanese art in Indonesia, before heading onto the Bromo region.
