This self-drive tour takes in many of Iceland's highlights in just eight action-packed days, staying in locally owned guesthouses, cottages and country hotels. Nearly 140 of Iceland's farmers are licensed to accommodate travellers and there are few better ways to experience Icelandic culture first hand.
With a day either side to soak up the spoils of Reykjavik, this tour is ideal for those who don't have much time but are keen to explore the many natural wonders along Iceland's well-laid ring road.

Day 1: Reykjavik
Fly by sheduled airline to Iceland's capital Reykjavik. On arrival, transfer to your centrally located hotel.
Day 2: Þingvellir - Gullfoss - Geysir - South Shore
Today's highlights include Þingvellir National Park, a place of great geological and historical interest, the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall and the famous Geysir hot-spring area. Your driving route will take you along Iceland's southern coastline visiting Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls as well as the black sand beaches around Vík and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
Optional excursion: Boat tour to Westman Islands.
Day 3: Kirkjubæjarklaustur - Skaftafell - Jökulsárlón - Höfn
Today's drive visits the pretty village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur before heading to Skaftafell National Park, a stunning green oasis below the great Vatnajökull glacier and surrounded by inhospitable black desert sands. The road then continues on to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon and finally the charming harbor town Höfn, best known as the lobster capital of northern Europe.
Optional excursion: Boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon; glacier hike in Skaftafell area.
Day 4: Höfn - Djúpivogur - Reyðarfjörður - Egilsstaðir
Today's journey follows the coast past dramatic cliffs and charming fishing villages along Iceland's Eastern Fjords. Along the way there will be an opportunity to take a boat tour to Papey Island, home to thousands of puffins, or visit Petra's famous collection of local stones and minerals at Stöðvarfjörður.
Optional excursion: Boat tour to Papey Island, Petra's stone collection.
Day 5: Egilsstaðir - Dettifoss - Húsavík - Mývatn
Continue on across the spectacular Möðrudalsöræfi highlands, known for their barren, untouched beauty, towards Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall. Visit the magnificent horseshoe-shaped canyon Ásbyrgi before driving to Tjörnes peninsula and Húsavík fishing port, a prime spot for whale watching.
Optional excursion: Whale watching from Húsavík
Day 6: Mývatn - Akureyri/Skagafjörður
Explore the many and varied sights of the Lake Mývatn area, including the amazing volcanic formations at Dimmuborgir. Visit the craters at Skútustaðir before heading to the colorful sulfurous slopes of Námaskarð and Krafla volcanic area. Today ends with a drive to Goðafoss waterfall and the capital of the north Akureyri/Skagafjörður area.
Optional excurison: Bird museum in Mývatn.
Day 7: Varmahlíð - Reykholt - Borgarnes - Hvalfjörður - Reykjavík
This morning, continue through the historical region of Skagafjörður, famous for Icelandic horse breeding. Here there will be the opportunity to visit an old farmstead at Glaumbær, a fascinating place and a fine example of old Icelandic architecture. In the afternoon, drive to the bay of Húnaflói and across Holtavörðuheiði plateau to the region called Borgarfjörður before returning to Reykjavík in the evening.
Another option is to travel across the barren Kjölur highland road (4WD needed, track open from mid-June), to the geothermal oasis at Hveravellir before driving to Reykjavík.
Optional excursion: River rafting in Skagafjörður; horse riding in Skagafjörður; seal watching tour from Hvammstangi.
Day 8: Departure
After breakfast, enjoy some free time to further explore Reykjavic city centre before transferring to your onward flight or, as an optional side trip, via the Blue Lagoon, a unique geothermal spa located only 15 minutes from the airport.
