Travel from the capital Kuching into the dense, verdant rainforest to discover jungle-dwelling tribes living in longhouses and an astounding array of wildlife. Mangroves, rainforest , beaches and the world’s largest limestone cave system await intrepid visitors, whop will discover that Sarawak is everything that Borneo ought to be.
Day 1: Flight to Kuching
Depart the UK for your flight to Kuching via Kuala Lumpur.
Day 2: Kuching
You will be met on arrival at Kuching Airport and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to spend at your leisure.
Day 3: Kuching - Bako National Park
Take a full-day tour to Bako National Park, situated about 38 km from Kuching on the Maura Tebas peninsular, at the mouth of the Sarawak River. The journey to the national park takes you past beautiful nipah palms, coconut plantations and mangrove swamps. A unique feature of Bako is the way nature has delightfully combined spectacular landscapes of steep coastline cliffs, weather-eroded rock formations and wave-beaten sea stacks with abundant flora and fauna, wildlife and a thriving mangrove swamp. It is a rare place, which should please even the most demanding photographer or wildlife and nature enthuasiast. Bako supports several types of distinct vegetation - open shrubland and hardy flora at the plateau of the hill range changing to lush and tall rainforest trees and plants and lowland dipterocarp forest on the slopes and finally to casuarina and mangrove trees along the coast. It is also home to numerous species of birds, snakes and animals such as the proboscis monkeys, long tailed macaques, wild boars, sambar deers and monitor lizards.
Day 4: Kuching - Semonggok Rehabilitation Centre
Today, visit Semonggok Rehabilitation Centre, the best place in Sarawak to view semi-wild orang utans, who have been rescued from captivity and now live in the surrounding forest reserve. The rehabilitated animals roam freely in the rain forest, and often return to the centre at feeding time. Thanks to the successful breeding programme at Semonggok there is a good possibility of experiencing one of the most heart-warming sights in Borneo - an orang utan mother with a young baby. Semenggok also has a number of short jungle trails and optional forest walks can be incorporated into the tour. Note : As the orang utan in Semengok are semi-wild, sightings cannot be guaranteed
Day 5: Batang Ai
Depart Kuching for Lemanak and Batang Ai. The journey takes you through lush green countryside dotted with paddy fields, pepper gardens and rubber plantations, and flanked by rugged jungle-clad mountains. Along the way, stop off at the Serian farmer’s market, visit a pepper garden and view carnivorous pitcher plants before stopping for lunch at a roadside bazaar deep in Iban country. Arrive at Lemanak jetty mid-afternoon for a longboat ride up the Lemanak River, passing through stunning countryside. Arrive at Serubah Longhouse and spend some time meeting Iban tribespeople. Dinner, featuring delicious fresh jungle produce, is served in the simple guest-house. In the evening, return to the longhouse for entertainment, including traditional dancing, music, games and a glass or two of tuak (rice wine) with the longhouse chief. The Iban are a fun-loving people, and visitors are expected to join in!
Day 6: Batang Ai
In the morning, enjoy a blowpipe demonstration, then take a short walk through the forest accompanied by Iban trackers, and learn about the traditional uses of rainforest plants in Iban culture. The walk ends at the river bank, where you embark on a longboat journey upriver to a tree-lined jungle pool.in the afternoon , bathe in the pool or relax at the waterside. Return downriver for a transfer to Batang Ai jetty and a 30 minute boat ride across the 24 sq km Batang Ai Hydro Lake.
Day 7: Jambu
In the morning, depart for Jambu Longhouse by motorized native longboat. The journey will take you across the lake into the Batang Ai River. Upon arrival at Jambu, spend some time at the longhouse before heading to Enseluai Waterfall for a picnic lunch. Whilst there, relax, swim or explore the rainforest before returning to the resort via the same route.
Day 8: Kuching
After breakfast depart for Kuching, stopping for lunch at a small roadside town.
Day 9: Miri
In the morning, transfer to the airport for a short flight to Miri. On arrival in Miri you will head straight to the prehistoric Niah Caves. In the afternoon, return to Miri and stay here overnight.
Day 10: Mulu National Park
After breakfast at the hotel you will transfer to the airport for your flight to Mulu.
Upon arrival at Mulu Airport you will be met and transferred to your accommodation. In the afternoon, journey to Mulu National Park headquarters for registration before taking a board walk to reach Deer Cave & Lang Cave. After exploring the caves, visit the nearby bat observatory to see bats flying out of the caves’ entrance as the evening draws in.
Day 11: Mulu National Park
In the morning, transfer by longboat to Batu Bungan, a Penan settlement, to observe traditional tribal lifestyle. there are also many local handicrafts on display for sale at the settlement. Continue your journey by longboat to Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave. Later on you can enjoy swimming at the Cleawater spring.
Days 12-13; Mulu National Park
Spend two days at your leisure, enjoying some of the activities available in the park such as cycling, fishing or even rock climbing.
Day 14: Miri
Check-out from your hotel and transfer to the airport for your return flight to Miri. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore Miri at your leisure.
Day 15: Miri - UK
After breakfast, transfer to Miri Airport for your onward flight to UK
