Much of Iceland is still taking shape before your very eyes – raw, dramatic landscapes born from volcanic eruptions and carved out by glaciers.
The south coast has a plethora of glaciers, geysers, volcanoes, mountains and waterfalls to explore, while the capital boasts a friendly village feel and as many attractions as a metropolis of millions. A vibrant icon of the modern era and host to the Statue or Liberty, Ground Zero and Sex and the City, New York provides a very different brand of excitement and adventure. World-famous shops, restaurants, museums and Broadways shows are all waiting to be found, together with the best of period and contemporary accommodation.
Day 1 Arrival
Arrive in Iceland and drive to Hotel Ranga (p13), the only 4-star hotel in the south of Iceland. Check in for three nights.
Days 2–3 Hotel Ranga
Two days at leisure gives you time to explore the south coast. Close by is the Dyrhólaey peninsula, a nesting site for puffins in summer and home to a gigantic black arch of lava standing in the sea. Also close are Iceland’s black-sand beaches and the Skógafoss waterfall, which at 25 m wide and 60 m high is one of the biggest in the country. Alternatively, take a drive out to the iceberg-studded Jökulsárlón lagoon and you won’t be disappointed.
Days 4–5 Reykjavik
After breakfast, drive to Reykjavik, visiting Geysir’s thermal vents and the spectacular Gulfoss waterfall on the way. Drop off your hire car and check in for two nights at Hotel Reykjavik Centrum (p10). A day spent in Reykjavik should never be passed up. The world’s northernmost capital is home to more than a dozen museums and galleries, cosy cafes, world-class restaurants and an old town crammed with sites and attractions.
Day 6 New York
We recommend visiting the Blue Lagoon for a soothing dip in its mineral-rich waters on the way to the airport. Then fly to New York and transfer to a centrally located superior hotel, such as the Helmsley Park Lane Hotel. Check in for four nights. Honeymoons & Special Occasions
Days 7–9 New York
The Big Apple is a city that needs no introduction. You can gawk at the Guggenheim, picnic in Central Park or see the stars on Broadway. It’s a city made for honeymoon romance and your stay can be extended for as long as you like.
Days 10–11 Departure
Transfer to the airport for your flight back to Reykjavik and on to the uk, arriving early the next morning.
