Once home to several ancient civilisations, Pakistan combines history and incredible natural wonders to dramatic effect. It's location amidst several unruly neighbours and its frequent outbursts of sectarian and political violence though make Pakistan travel even more adventurous.
Every city here has a distinct identity. The capital Islamabad is an ordered, educated centre whilst its twin, Rawalpindi, is more chaotic; Lahore is the cultural heart of the country and Peshawar, with its atmospheric Old City bazaar, is the capital of the north-west frontier region. Karachi, on the Arabian Sea, has grown into a sprawling megacity but still has much to explore.
Trekkers and climbers ought to head to the foothills of Nanga Parbat and the other Himalayan mountains to discover dramatic passes and spectacular views.
Connecting Islamabad to Kashgar in China, the Karakorum Highway runs along the ancient Silk Route, across awesome mountain ranges; drive or mountain bike through the Himalayas, Hindu Kush, Karakorum, Kunlun and Pamir before travelling along the banks of the Indus river to Gilgit and the beautiful Hunza Valley.
