Drakensberg Mountains

Visit the Drakensberg Mountains

Introduction

The majestic World Heritage-listed Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park mountains border the edge of KwaZulu-Natal and the Kingdom of Lesotho. The dramatic 200 km escarpment marks the point where the Highveld terrain plunges over 1000m to the eastern lowveld plains. The Drakensberg is one of South Africa's most scenic areas, recognised for stunning views and adventure activities. The San Bushmen have lived here for thousands of years, which is evident by the plentiful San rock-art sites.

Northernberg

The Northernberg's most famous feature is the 8 km-wide Amphitheatre, regarded as one of the most impressive cliff faces in the world. Located within the Royal Natal National Park, the Amphitheatre is the site of the Tugela Falls, the world's second highest waterfall. In the remote ‘Lost Valley' you can witness a perilous man-made suspension bridge still in working order.

Centralberg

The Cathedral Peak area of Centralberg has some of the Drakensberg's most formidable peaks - Giant's Castle Peak, Monk's Cowl and Champagne Castle among them. The area is popular with climbers, but attracts many people for its beautiful mountain vistas. The Champagne Valley is known for its relaxed setting and numerous sporting activities, particularly golf.

Southernberg

Southernberg boasts one the region's best highlights: the journey up to Lesotho over the Sani Pass. The route's spectacular hairpin bends lead up to the highest mountain pass in the country, with incredible views across the Umkhomazana River. Another must is the Giant's Cup Trail, one of the South Africa's best walks.
