Introduction
At the foot of the UN's Human Development index and recovering from an atrocious civil war, Sierra Leone has in theory at least, little to offer as a holiday destination. However, peace has broken out and with it a handful of travellers are again discovering the country.
Beach holidays in Sierra Leone are the primary focus, with visitors heading to the secluded sand and surf outside the capital Freetown. In the evenings, the city comes alive and almost anything goes.
Travel elsewhere is haphazard and difficult, but for the adventurous there are rewards such as Outamba-Kilimi National Park where you can spot large mammals including elephants and pygmy hippos. The wildlife sanctuary at Tiwai Island is the place to head to see primates though; Sierra Leone's only community conservation area is also good for bird spotting.
