Introduction
The exotic, enchanting Comoros islands lie scattered across the Indian Ocean. Holidays in the Comoros are about escape and taking time out; these idyllic, alcohol-free destinations make an unconventional paradise where adventure awaits.
Grande Comore, also known as Ngazidja, is the biggest island and home to the capital Moroni, which has broad squares and modern buildings as well as older, narrow streets and a traditional market. The island is also home to the largest active volcano in the world, Mt Karthala, which last erupted in 2005; walking on the spectacular, blasted slopes is a popular pastime.
Anjouan, also known as Ndzuani, conforms to people's expectations of an island idyll, complete with palms, good-looking beaches and fragrant breezes carrying the scent of cloves and ylang-ylang.
The third island, Mohéli is the smallest island, with life centred around the town of Fomboni.
Close to the Comoros lies French-administered Mayotte, surrounded by coral reefs with exceptional diving facilities. The vast lagoon here is best explored by canoe.
