Hotel Milenij, Opatija, Croatia
Neoclassical elegance of a bygone era
Opatija is the longest established resort in the Kvarner region. It’s a place of grand Austro-Hungarian buildings, manicured gardens and magnolia trees. It also has a strong spa tradition. The 12km Lungo Mare is a waterfront path, which takes you as far as Lovran to the west. If you stop for lunch you can always get the bus or water taxi back.
The Hotel Milenij comprises several linked buildings of neo-classical and modern Italian style, set in the immaculate St Jakov Park. Opened in 2000, the hotel is reminiscent of a bygone jet-set era. Fountains and statues surround the hotel and the huge terrace is a popular place to meet for coffee and cakes.
The Royal Spa was fully refurbished in 2010 and a retractable roof means that half of the pool can be outdoors.
We like: The hotel’s own range of homemade chocolates and pralines.
Best for: Couples wanting a relaxing break.
