Deserts, volcanoes, glaciers and lakes

Chile is an incredible land of sharply contrasting landscapes. On one hand it has the driest desert on earth, the Atacama, and the oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama; on the other Chilean Patagonia with its glaciers, lakes and fierce granite peaks of Torres del Paine National Park.

Day 1: Santiago
Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel before embarking on a half-day tour of the city. Visit La Moneda, the Government Palace, the famous Plaza de Armas and Santa Lucia hill where the city was founded in 1541.

Day 2: San Pedro de Atacama
Fly to Calama and transfer to San Pedro de Atacama, an oasis in the heart of the world's driest desert. After settling in to your hotel you'll embark on your first excursion to see the sunset in the eerie setting of Moon Valley.

Day 3: San Pedro de Atacama
Enjoy a walking tour of San Pedro de Atacama followed by a visit to the pre-Columbian village of Tulor and the Pukara de Quitor fortress. In the afternoon visit the village of Tocanao and the massive Atacama Salt Lake.

Day 4: San Pedro de Atacama
It's an early start today to travel to El Tatio Geysers, a geothermal field flanked by soaring peaks and best viewed at sunrise. On the journey back to San Pedro, visit the tiny settlement of Machuca located at 3,400mtrs above sea level.

Day 5: Puerto Varas
Fly via Santiago to Puerto Montt and after a short city tour, a transfer will take you to Puerto Varas, located on the shores of Lake Llanquihue.

Day 6: Peulla
Drive along the shoreline of Lake Llanquihue, to Petrohué in the Vincente Pérez Rosales National Park where you will board a catamaran for a scenic ride across Lake Todos los Santos to Peulla. Enjoy stunning scenery and excellent views of the imposing Osorno volcano before returning to Puerto Varas.

Day 7: Chiloé Island
Catch a ferry across the Chacao Channel to Chiloé Island where stilted houses line the foreshore, seafood fills the markets and a belief in witchcraft runs deep. Return to Puerto Varas in the late afternoon.

Day 8: Fruitillar
Morning tour of Frutillar a small town founded by German settlers around 1850. Return to Puerto Varas for an afternoon at leisure.

Day 9: Puerto Natales
Head to the airport for your flight south to Punta Arenas. Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to the town Puerto Natales.

Day 10: Torres del Paine National Park
Early departure to Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO-listed reserve. Pass Laguna Amarga and Lake Pehoé and enjoy beautiful views of the Paine Massif, Almirante Nieto, and the famous Torres (towers) del Paine. Look out for wildlife including guanacos, flamingos, condors and eagles.

Day 11: Torres del Paine National Park
Today is yours to enjoy this spectacular park, a mecca for trekkers and wildlife enthusiasts. A choice of optional excursions to see glaciers and lakes is available.

Day 12: Punta Arenas
Morning at leisure before driving back to Punta Arenas, stopping enroute at the Milodón Cave where archaeologists found the 12,000 year old remains of a giant sloth.

Day 13: Santiago
Fly back to Santiago for a final night in Chile's capital city.

Stay: NH Ciudad de Santiago (B)

Day 14: End of Tour
Transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK.
