In-depth luxury tour of the Lost City and private island holiday

10 days/3 nights

The temples of Angkor represent one of Asia’s greatest kingdoms, covering six hundred years (802-1432) of Khmer civilisation. In the eleventh century, Angkor Thom was populated by more than one million people - at a time when London had an estimated population of just 35,000.

This in-depth guided tour of the temples includes three nights at the splendid Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor, followed by 6 nights at Song Saa, Cambodia’s first luxury private island resort.

Day 1: Arrive Siem Reap, Angkor Wat

Arrival and transfer to the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor. After lunch, step out from your hotel and enter the southern gate of the walled city of Angkor Thom. Marvelling at the eerie stone heads and evocative bas-reliefs of the Bayon temple, the central structure of Angkor Thom, move on to the Terrace of Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, then continue to the world’s largest sacred building and architectural masterpiece, Angkor Wat. This monumental building took more than thirty years to build and represents Khmer civilisation at its grandest.

Day 2: Temples of Angkor

Pre-dawn departure from your hotel for sunrise outside Angkor Wat. Enter the temple grounds by torchlight from the little-visited eastern side, creeping through the jungle to the temple. Soaking up the atmosphere of dawn at Angkor from the edge of one of the ancient library pools, step inside the temple and spend a thorough two hours exploring its corridors, central chambers and upper terraces.

After breakfast outside the temple and a short rest, continue to Preah Khan temple, a ruined but highly atmospheric mélange of tree roots and crumbling stone structures. After lunch and a swim back at the hotel, drive to the smaller-scale Banteay Kdei and jungle-enveloped Ta Prohm, one of the most atmospheric of all temples in Angkor and sister site of Preah Khan. Then it’s back to Angkor Wat to board a tethered balloon for a final, aerial view of the site.

Day 3: Angkor surrounds

Today you visit three of the most interesting temples outside Angkor Thom city. Pausing en route at Dom Deak to wander through a typical Cambodian village market, arrive mid-morning at King Suryavarman II’s eleventh-century Boeng Mealea temple - a prototype for Angkor Wat. Boeng Mealea stands almost forgotten in jungle and getting to the site is an adventure in itself.

Tree roots envelop many of the temple walls and doorways, and the atmosphere is an eerie contrast to the more frequently visited temples closer to Angkor Wat. Next is Banteay Srei, where detailed reliefs in the sandstone structure are regarded as the finest, most skilfully crafted in Cambodia. After lunch at a local restaurant, end your discoveries of the temples of Angkor with a brief stop at well-preserved Banteay Samre, a laterite structure which once featured internal moats.
