Salta & The Northwest tour
The region around Salta in Argentina’s northwest has some of the most spectacular scenery in the country, from dazzling white salt plains to parched red desert and colourful mountains. The area is rich with Inca and colonial history and refreshingly light on tourists. It even boasts some first-class vineyards.
Day 1 Salta
Arrive in Salta and transfer to your hotel before a city tour. Salta maintains a distinctly Spanish feel, with colonial architecture present in its many original buildings. At dusk, you can wander through palm-filled plazas enjoying the sound of traditional folk groups.
Day 2 Purmamarca
Visit the pre-Inca ruins of Tastil before lunch at 3,744 m above sea level. Look out for llamas as you carry on through dazzling white salt plains and desert-like plateaus to Purmamarca, a gem of a village at the base of the Mount of Seven Colours.
Day 3 Humahuaca Valley
Enjoy a full-day tour of the Humahuaca Valley. You will see substantial evidence of its use as a trade route over the last 10,000 years, and also be amazed by the mineral-rich mountain sides, whose colours range from the dark iron reds to sulphurous yellows and corroded copper greens.
Day 4 Cachi
Pass tobacco plantations, colonial ruins, Inca roads and stretches of cacti on your way to Cachi. Be sure to visit the archaeological museum, the most impressive of its kind in the whole north-west.
Day 5 Cafayate
Stops today include Seclantás, known for its gorgeous ponchos; Molinos, a 17th century town virtually untouched in 350 years; and the Brealito Volcanic Lagoon. Arrive in Cafayate to spend the night at the Viñas de Cafayate Wine Resort (tastings are easily arranged).
Days 6-7 Salta
Drive back through spectacular scenery to Salta for a final night before transferring to the airport the next day.
