David Bellamy is a professor, botanist, author, broadcaster and environmental campaigner. He has written more than 40 books and 80 scientific papers relating to ecology and the environment and, having presented on more than 400 television programmes, his larger-than-life character is now known to millions.
Born in London, Bellamy's life was transformed following a day trip to the countryside as a boy, sparking his love affair with nature. He went on to train as a botanist at Durham University and later took up the position of senior lecturer, which he held until 1982. He remains Honorary Professor for Adult and Continuing Education.
Bellamy is the founder, along with David Shreeve and The Conservation Foundation – which he also set up – of the Ford European Conservation Awards. He has held top positions with a number of environmental organisations and has won several awards, including the BAFTA Richard Dimbleby Award, the BSAC Diver of the Year Award and the Dutch Order of the Golden Ark.
