Suggested itinerary in full
Day 1 Hanoi Arrive in Hanoi, the political and historical centre of Vietnam, and transfer to the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, by far the best hotel in the city.
Day 2 Take a cyclo ride through the Old Quarter; visit Ba Dinh Square, site of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum; the Presidential Palace and the Temple of Literature. End with a performance of Hanoi’s famed
water puppets.
Day 3 Halong Bay Cruise Halong Bay, the country’s greatest natural wonder, with over 3,000 limestone islands rising from its emerald waters. Explore caves and islets and spend a memorable night aboard a traditional Chinese junk.
Day 4 More time to make the most of Halong Bay’s stunning scenery and delicious seafood before driving back to Hanoi.
Day 5 Hoi An Fly south to Danang. Visit the Cham Museum; the Marble Mountains, whose caves hide sacred Buddhist shrines; China Beach, used by us forces for r&r in the war; and end in Hoi An.
Days 6-7 Enjoy a morning walking tour, then spend the rest of your time at leisure. Relax on the beach, dine out at the many restaurants or explore the many galleries, tailors and handicraft shops.
Day 8 Saigon Fly to Saigon and take an afternoon walking tour of the city’s historic landmarks, including Reunification Palace and the haunting War Remnants Museum.
Day 9 Cu Chi Tunnels Take a fascinating excursion to the Cu Chi Tunnels, a 250-km, three-level network of underground tunnels used to wage guerrilla warfare against first the French and then the Americans.
Day 10 Mekong Delta See the ‘rice bowl’ of Vietnam, the Mekong Delta. Take a boat to one of the Mekong River’s islands and a smaller sampan through its winding tributaries.
Day 11 Siem Reap Fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia. See the floating villages of Tonle Sap lake and the good work done by charitable organisation, Friends Without Borders.
Day 12 Temples of Angkor Spend a whole day exploring the magnificent temples of Angkor, including sunrise at Angkor Wat, a tethered balloon flight above the temple complex, and the jungle enveloped Ta Prohm.
Day 13 Outlying temples Visit two of the most interesting outlying temples: the 11th century Boeng Mealea, a prototype for the more famous Angkor Wat; and Banteay Srei, which has only been accessible since the late
1990s, after the Khmer Rouge left.
Day 14 Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
