California’s Pacific Coast Highway
Day 1 Santa Monica
The beach setting is the number one reason many people visit Santa Monica. It makes an ideal base from which to explore the many sights and attractions of Los Angeles.
Days 2–3 Santa Barbara
Head north through Malibu to the beautiful coastal town of Santa Barbara. Most major attractions are concentrated in a compact downtown area laced with pedestrian friendly footpaths and shopping malls. It also has great beaches and some of America’s best vineyards are just a short drive inland.
Day 4 San Simeon
San Simeon is the halfway point between Los Angeles and San Francisco and the site of Hearst Castle, the magnificent and opulent estate of publisher William Randolph Hearst. It is now a National Historic Monument and open for tours – we highly recommend you include a visit in your itinerary.
Day 5 Carmel
Continue your journey north passing the dramatic wilderness and cliffs of the Big Sur as the road weaves its way alongside the ocean. Head to Monterey and follow 17-Mile Drive for a close-up view of the famous Pebble Beach golf links.
Days 6–7 San Francisco
Continue north to one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities. Two full days to explore the delights of San Francisco – Nob Hill, Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf and world-famed crooked Lombard Street. You’ll probably find that two days is not enough time to take in all that this captivating city has to offer – it’s a good enough reason to return at a later date.
Prices from: £827 for 7 nights accommodation, 8 days Alamo car hire, a self-drive information pack, and international flights.
