Seychelles holidays

I’ve never seen so many extraordinary beaches and so few people on them. The forests are lush, the beaches are loaded with green and hawksbill turtles, and the water is crowded with fish.

Seychelles holiday experts at WEXAS will tailor-make all aspects of your itinerary to create a Seychelles holiday, personal to you.

The Seychelles lies just four degrees south of the equator, but several hundred miles from anywhere. In all there’s 115 islands scattered across this area of the Indian Ocean. Some of these are low-lying coral atolls and reef islands while just over 40 are mid-ocean granite islands. The latter are focused around the main island Mahé, while the rest form the Outer Islands.

Most visitors come to stay on Mahé, Praslin or La Digue, which act as the cultural and economic heart of the country. Mahé, home to 90% of the population, reflects the diverse ethnicity of the nation’s residents. African, Indian, Chinese and Europeans all have roots here. The island itself is quite an extraordinary sight – 1000m granite peaks reach up to the sky in the forested interior. Rare endemic plants can be seen on hikes into the centre, in Morne Seychellois National Park.

The islands as a whole are an excellent destination for ecotourism, and a favourite for bird watchers and those wanting to see giant tortoises in their natural habitat. And when you tire of exploring this magical land, any beach you choose to recover on – all white sands, big glacis boulders and palms – could very well be the most beautiful you’ve ever seen.

Seychelles tailor-made holiday highlights

Mahé
The largest of the islands, and home to the airport, port, capital, hotels and most of the population. But it is not spoilt, protected by coral reefs, and with 70 white, powder-sand beaches, rich, lush vegetation, coconut palm plantations, and forested peaks, it is the stuff of dreams.

Victoria
is the only town in the country any other settlement is a village. Glass bottomed boat trips can be taken to nearby islands, some closed, some national parks, and others home to botanical gardens and giant tortoises. A number of museums are found in the capital detailing Seychellois life.

Cousin Island
Only accessible as part of an organised tour, Cousin is run as a nature reserve by the International Council for Bird Protection. Local species including the brush warbler, the Seychelles toc-toc, and the fairy tern are all protected. In April and May, 1.25 million birds come to nest on the island – and it's only two hours from Mahé.

Aldabra
The world's largest atoll is home to 150,000 giant land tortoises, five times as many as their more famous home on the Galapagos Islands. These 13 islands make up one third of the total Seychelles landmass and are a World Heritage Site.

Desroches
Only recently developed as a resort, the largest of the Amirantes archipelago is surrounded by coral reef, providing calm waters ideal for watersports. Windsurfing, sailing, fishing and scuba diving can all be enjoyed from here. Sea cliffs, tunnels and caves make for interesting diving.
