Tailor-made Russia
Moscow & St Petersburg highlights
To quote Winston Churchill, Russia is "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma" - and undoubtably one of Europe’s cultural draws.
Russia Revealed - 5 night tailor-made trip introducing Moscow & St Petersburg
Prices from £1,285 pp for 5 nights.
This five-night tailor-made tour lifts the lid on its two most celebrated cities. Begin in Moscow, with 2 nights at the 5-star Swisshotel Krasnye Holmy, where elegant rooms offer panoramic views of the city and the Kremlin and Red Square are just a short walk away. Why not take in a performance at Moscow’s beloved Bolshoi Theatre. Then travel by train to St Petersburg and check in to the Angleterre Hotel. St Petersburg’s contribution to culture outstrips even that of Moscow’s. It would take approximately 9 years to cast even a brief glance at each of the Hermitage Museum’s 150,000 works on display - and that’s only 5% of its collection.

Introduction to Russia
Moscow’s focus is Red Square and the Kremlin. The area still emits a strong Cold War atmosphere. Nostalgic communists should visit Lenin’s Mausoleum. Take in a show at the Bolshoi theatre, where Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake once premiered, and where ballet and opera are regularly performed to this day.
St Petersburg’s exquisite architecture makes the city one of the most beautiful anywhere on the planet and masks the fact that the city was founded on a mosquito-infested swamp. Europe’s fourth largest city is one of the most culturally significant too, as the birthplace of Dostoyevsky, Shostakovich, and the Russian Revolution. Highlights include the Winter Palace and the Hermitage’s fabulous art collection.
Venture out and experience The Golden Ring, the area north-east of Moscow is famed for its ancient towns, including Suzdal, with great historical, architectural and spiritual significance. Several are on rivers, and river cruises are a great way to see this area.
Siberia covers 12,800,000 sq km, this enormous region of marshy forest, Tundra and plain stretches east from the Urals all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Though well below freezing in winter, a visit in summer is fascinating. ’Sleeping land’, as it translates, contains a million lakes and more than 50,000 rivers. Among these lakes is Lake Baikal, the largest freshwater lake on earth and also the world’s oldest and deepest lake: it holds more water than all of the North American Great Lakes combined.
And finally Caucasus the mountainous region of often-overlooked Republics and home to fiercely proud peoples. Provinces include Kalmykia, North Ossetia, Dagestan and Chechnya, some of which remain largely unknown even in Russia. The ancient city of Derbent, whose great stone walls are said to rival the Great Wall in China, is an important hub.
