Pousadas are similar to Spain’s Paradors (see opposite page), forming a network of hotels in historic converted buildings across Portugal that offer the same value and flexibility.
Pousada de Oporto
Built in the mid 18th century, the Palácio Freixo is one of the most remarkable examples of Portuguese baroque architecture and a national monument, built just upstream from the old town of Oporto. The Pousada contains a spa and pool, while rooms enjoy a river view.

Pousada de Arraiolos
Housed in a spacious and beautifully converted 16th century convent, the Pousada de Arraiolos enjoys magnificent views from its hilltop location. Private verandas overlook the pool and guests can stroll in the cloisters.

Pousada de Guimarães
Set on a hillside overlooking the historic town of Guimarães, just 45 minutes from Oporto, this Pousada is a converted 12th century Augustinian convent. It retains many original features – and most importantly the decorative façade – but now contains 51 rooms and a swimming pool, as well as formal gardens, a lake, cloisters and fountains.

Pousada de Ourém-Fátima
Located inside the wonderful walled town of Ourém, close to one of Europe’s main pilgrimage destinations following a sighting of the Virgin Mary, this Pousada consists of a cluster of whitewashed medieval houses – one an old hospital, another once servants’ quarters – and a swimming pool. And it’s less than two hours’ drive from Lisbon.
