The sky in Portugal was cloudless, our luggage came off swiftly, we found our driver quickly and we were enjoying a glass of champagne in the hotel by 10.15 am, just one hour after we had touched down.
We found ourselves in a deluxe room in the hotel (number 11), which was on the top floor and outside, the most delightful balcony facing South down the hillside, over the plain to the sea. The view was as good as anything we have seen anywhere else in the world. The room itself was spacious and having peeked into one of their suites the only real difference was simply the size of the balcony. The brochure is as good as its word and the maid lays up breakfast in the morning knocking gently on the balcony window to make sure that we know it is ready. By 9 am the sun was just peeping onto our balcony and we were able to eat breakfast in total privacy in our dressing gowns (thoughtfully provided by the hotel) in total comfort.
The grounds of the hotel are spacious and it is possible to spend the day in total privacy in one of the many shady nooks in the grounds. There are two pools (one is attached to the villa behind the main building) and the most company we ever had around the hotel pool was maybe two other couples at the busiest time of day.
The quality of food and service is second to none. Seafood has never tasted so delicious and we were quite content to stay in the hotel for lunch and dinner every day during our short stay.
But what a find Monte do Casal is and thank you so much for pointing us in its direction. My wife is already looking up the temperatures for April and May and a return journey is a must. The only downside from your point of view is that we are now wondering why we go through all the hassle of long-haul to the Caribbean each year when you can book us into Monte do Casal with no attendant jet-lag, no overnight stay in Gatwick, no seven and a half -hour flight time and where the money saved on air fares can buy Michelin standard cooking!
