“Muscat was the realisation of a pirate's lair as imagined by any schoolboy: a crescent of white houses huddled in a cove with high cliffs projecting on either side. The place was clearly designed as a centre for piracy and slave-running.” Cedric Belfrage, 1936

Oman tailor-made holiday highlights
MuscatHaggle for bargains in the enchanting souks (Mutrah is the best) and explore the many castles, mosques and towers of Oman's capital, a city full of character ancient and modern. Old Muscat is dominated by the two cliff-side forts of Mirani and Jalali, the al-Alam Palace and the sturdy city walls.
Nizwa areaVerdant oasis town and former seat of power. Listen in the evenings as the call of the muezzin from the nearby Sultan Qaboos Mosque fills the air. The animal market is on a Friday. The nearby village of Bahla is steeped in myths and legends and famous for its pottery. In the distance are the rugged Western Hajar mountains, a network of canyons and caves. Jabrin Fort has fine carvings and elaborate balconies.
Wahiba SandsFollow the trails of Bedouin tribes through this isolated desert region, fringed by fortified towns and home to Omani pit-weavers who design elegant textiles from looms dug into the earth.
SurTake a dhow trip, snorkel, dive and sunbathe on this enticing stretch of coastline, or wander the quiet and appealing town, said to be the home of Sinbad the Sailor. South of Sur lie the breeding grounds of the Green Turtle.
SalalahExplore the unspoilt beaches and lush landscapes of an area steeped in legend, where frankincense can still be gathered and where migrating birds are drawn by the cool rains of the monsoon. Dolphins sometimes break the surface near the shore.
Wadi ShabOne of the loveliest spots in Oman, with views of emerald green pools, caves, waterfalls and terraced fruit plantations. Kingfishers add glorious splashes of colour to this wadi between Muscat and Sur.
