Full day-by-day itinerary
Day 1. Arrive Amsterdam, Embark Ship
Be met at the airport and transferred to the ms Sound of Music, conveniently moored close to Amsterdam’s city centre. Tonight enjoy the chance to meet your fellow travellers at a Welcome Reception.
Day 2. Amsterdam Canal Boat Cruise
Join a canal boat cruise today and see the sights of Amsterdam from a unique vantage point. Cruise in a glass-top boat and admire the stunning architecture of the city, from 17th century homes to charming churches and 16th century merchant houses. Afterwards, enjoy some free time to explore at your leisure, then tonight, return to your ship and enjoy a sumptuous dinner on board.
Day 3. Cologne, Koblenz
Having entered Germany overnight, cruise past Dusseldorf and arrive in Cologne. Here, enjoy a tour through the old part of Germany’s fourth-largest city. Returning to your ship, continue cruising to the 2,000 year-old town of Koblenz, set in one of Germany’s most important wine-producing regions. After dinner this evening, disembark the ship and take an evening stroll through the middle of this charming city.
Day 4. Koblenz, Rudesheim
Today cruise through the Rhine Gorge on what is regarded as the most beautiful stretch of the Rhine. Later arrive in Rüdesheim where a mini-train will take you to Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Instrument Museum for a tour.
Day 5. Wertheim, Miltenberg
In Wertheim, disembark the ship and travel by coach to Miltenberg. Take a tour of this Franconian town before re-boarding the coach and returning to Wertheim. Known for its glassworks, wine and friendly people, the time you spend here is an ideal introduction to a typical medieval village. Watch a local glass-blowing demonstration, then relax as you cruise through the valleys of the meandering Main.
Day 6. Wurzburg
Surrounded by green hills covered with vineyards, Wurzburg is a crucial centre for wine and trade. During a tour here, see the impressive Residential Palace and churches ranging in styles from Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque to Modern. Then enjoy free time to further explore, or perhaps take an optional excursion to the beautiful walled town of Rothenburg. After dinner on board this evening the ship continues cruising towards Bamberg.
Day 7. Bamberg
After breakfast, disembark your ship and travel by coach to the World Heritage-listed town of Bamberg. During your time here, tour the city’s streets, with their charming houses and 18th century mansions. After your tour, there is time at leisure to shop, relax or explore further before returning to your ship. Back on board, the ship cruises into the Main-Danube Canal. Having taken 32 years to construct, the canal was completed in 1992 and truly is a feat of modern engineering. Enjoy another delicious dinner on board as you cruise towards Nuremberg, the capital of Franconia.
Day 8. Nuremberg, Continental Divide
Nuremberg played a pivotal role for the Nazi Party and was thus systematically bombed by the British and US air forces during World War II. It went on to act as the symbolic host of the infamous Nuremberg Trials. Today, visit a number of Nuremberg’s World War II sites on a guided tour and get a feel for the history of this symbolic city. At lunch, re-board your ship and continue along the Main-Danube Canal. This afternoon, thanks to the series of stair step locks, you’ll arrive at the highest point of your cruise, 435 metres above sea level, where you will cross Europe’s Continental Divide.
Day 9. Regensburg
Arrive in Regensburg today, located at the confluence of the Danube and Regen rivers and one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval cities. Here you’ll have the opportunity to see one of the oldest bridges crossing the Danube and take a guided tour of the city’s architectural highlights including the Old Town Hall, the World Heritage-listed city centre and the Porta Pretoria - gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179 AD. Tonight, enjoy a music performance on board.
Day 10. Passau, Linz
After breakfast this morning, you’ll arrive in Passau. Take a tour of the sights, including a trip to St Stephen’s Cathedral, before enjoying an afternoon of scenic cruising into Austria and to Linz. After dinner tonight, disembark the ship and explore the sights of Linz during an evening stroll through this pretty town.
Day 11. Melk, Durnstein, Weissenkirchen
Cruise through the scenic Strudengau region to the pretty Wachau Valley this morning and take a tour of Melk’s Benedictine Abbey, one of the world’s most famous monastic sites. Located on an outcrop overlooking the Danube, it has the rare distinction of surviving as an active Benedictine monastery continuously since its foundation. After, rejoin your ship and continue to Dürnstein for a tour along the medieval cobblestone streets of this town. High above town, you’ll see the ruins of the castle where Richard the Lionheart, the King of England, was imprisoned in 1192. Then re-board your ship and cruise back to Weissenkirchen, where you’ll have the chance to sample Wachau Valley wines.
Day 12. Vienna
Today take a guided tour of Vienna, including St Stephen’s Cathedral, Hofburg Imperial Palace, the Vienna Opera House, Ringstrasse and more. You’ll also enjoy a taste of Austria when you visit a traditional Viennese coffee house for cake and coffee. Then enjoy free time to further explore. Tonight, perhaps join us for an optional Mozart and Strauss concert.
Day 13. Vienna, Bratislava
This morning depart Vienna and cruise across the Austrian border into Slovakia. Upon arrival in the capital of Bratislava, disembark and take a walking tour. After your tour, the rest of the day is at leisure for you to further explore. Later, re-board your ship for dinner.
Day 14. Budapest
Still on the Danube, arrive in Budapest, the romantic Hungarian capital. With its intriguing history, incredible architecture and rich cultural heritage, Hungary’s capital deserves its reputation as the Paris of central Europe. Following breakfast, disembark for a guided sightseeing tour of Budapest that includes 500 year-old Matthias Church, St Stephen’s Basilica, the distinctive Fisherman’s Bastion, the marvellous Royal Palace and historic Buda Castle, where you have views of Buda and Pest over both banks of the river.
Day 15. Disembark Ship, Depart Budapest
After breakfast this morning, disembark the ship and transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
