Kenya holidays

In Kenya you’ve got the great birds and monkeys leaping through the trees overhead. It’s a chance to remember what the world is really like.

Joanna Lumley

Kenya holiday experts at WEXAS will tailor-make all aspects of your itinerary to create a Kenya holiday, personal to you.

Kenya is rightly known as one of the top destinations for a wildlife safari, boasting some of the best parks in East and Southern Africa. As well as the Masai Mara, home to the Maasai tribe, you can also catch sight of the Big Five – elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo – at Tsavo National Park.

Lake Naivasha is an excellent spot for watching hippos wallowing in the lake – its shores were once home to Born Free author Joy Adamson – while the sight of thousands of pink flamingo at Lake Nakuru is something to behold and just one of the reasons Kenya is held as one of the top five bird-watching destinations.

Other ‘must-do’ experiences in the country include hiking along the glacial ridges of Mt Kenya, snorkelling along the Indian Ocean coast at the Marine National Park by Malindi, taking some time to explore Nairobi’s nightlife, and of course, that hot air balloon ride above the Mara during the wildebeest migration.

Kenya tailor-made holiday highlights

Amboseli
Game park dominated by the imposing snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, an impressive backdrop to huge herds of buffalo and elephant.

Masai Mara
Home to the Maasai tribe, the Mara also hosts the great wildebeest migration. Lion, cheetah and leopard keep tabs on the gazelles, giraffes and zebra roaming the plains, elephant cool off in the swamps, crocodile and hippo can be seen on the banks of the Mara river; and hot air balloon rides are available for a bird's eye view of it all.

Lake Nakuru
The first and only park in Africa to have been created for the protection of the lesser flamingo: when they gather on the lake in their thousands the entire surface of the water ripples with pink reflections. The park is also home to a herd of black rhino.

Tsavo
Explore the flat arid bush of one of Africa's largest parks, divided into east and west sections - the east dotted with baobab trees and especially famous for herds of elephant, the west noted for crystal-clear pools in which hippo wallow and crocodile lurk.

Lamu & the coast
The island of Lamu is lost in time, with dhows and donkeys providing transport. Mombasa's old town is like Lamu, with its markets and winding medieval streets. Between the two lies Watamu, a marine national park with good snorkelling. The coastline south of Mombasa is a tropical paradise of palm fringed white sand beaches.

Aberdare National Park
Part of a mountain range, lush and lovely. Thick forest provides shelter for the rare bongo, an elusive forest antelope, while colobus perch in branches. The park is also home to leopard, rhino and elephant.

Samburu
Reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostriches, graceful gerenuk, buffalo, lion, cheetah, hippos and crocodiles can easily be found in this rugged park with riverine forest and undulating plains.
