Tailor-made Kenya & Tanzania

Tailor-made Kenya & Tanzania

East Africa has long been considered the land of the safari. The very word originated in Tanzania - it means ‘journey’ in the KiSwahili language.

Tanzania’s famed Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, and home to a staggering 30,000 animals. Adjacent is the vast Serengeti, where each April and May the rumbling hooves of a million wildebeest mark the start of the Great Migration. The herds brave crocodile-infested rivers and scores of predators to reach fresh pastures in Kenya’s Masai Mara. The Mara is the big cat capital of the world, and whether you see it from a floating balloon, or on foot with a Masai warrior, it’s a land that’s hard to forget. After experiencing the highs of a safari, there’s no better way to recharge the batteries than a relaxing week staying at one of the superb beach resorts on the island of Zanzibar, or one of many along the Kenyan coast.

Whether you are a first time visit or are planning a second or third trip our Africa experts can tailor your holiday to suit your requirements from a wide range of hotels, lodges and destinations.

You may wish to combine Kenya and Tanzania. Again, our Africa experts are here to help. Give them a call on 0845 643 6572

Kenya’s highlights

The Masai Mara National Reserve was named for the Maasai people who inhabit the area, and for the Mara River, which flows through this great reserve. It shares a border with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and is essentially a continuation of this park, forming the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The Masai Mara is home to an excellent year-round concentration of game and is renowned for its annual visit by the two million animals that make up the Great Migration. Covering an impressive 1 115 km² (430 square miles), the Masai Mara is a land of breathtaking vistas, abundant wildlife and endless plains. The Masai Mara was made famous by the book Out of Africa by Karen Blixen, which was later made into a movie starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep.

Meru National Park was made famous by conservationists George and Joy Adamson, and the film based on their book Born Free, the famous story of Elsa the lioness. Meru is a park of great scenic beauty, featuring 13 rivers and supporting a wide range of diverse habitats. It’s a paradise for birdwatchers and home to several rare bird species. A section of the park has been designated a wilderness area with no roads, which adds to the air of wild, remote seclusion that is characteristic of Meru National Park.

With its incredible wildlife and picturesque surroundings, it’s a real surprise that Samburu National Park remains one of Kenya’s lesser-visited regions. However, its peaceful atmosphere and the authentic wilderness experience set it apart from the country’s better-known wildlife reserves. Situated on the banks of the Ewaso Ngíro River, with its palm groves and dense forests, Samburu boasts plentiful wildlife and the birdwatching is especially good. The remainder of the reserve is semi-arid, making for easy game viewing.

The Kenyan coast is the perfect extension to a safari. Mombasa is worth a visit; its spice-scented Old Town forms a labyrinth of winding streets filled with beautiful Arab architecture and a bustling marketplace. The island of Lamu is lost in time, with dhows and donkys providing transport. Between the two lies Watamu, a marine national park with great snorkelling. The coastline south of Mombasa is a tropical paradise of palm fringed white sand beaches.

Tanzania’s highlights

Lake Manyara National Park offers a wilderness experience rich in diverse habitats, from its Rift Valley soda lake to its dense woodlands and steep mountainsides. Apart from a spectacular setting, the park is famous for its unusual tree-climbing lions and the vast elephant herds it was established to protect. The shores of the lake, encrusted with pink flamingo, attract more than 400 species of birds. Large herds of buffalo, cheetah, Masai giraffe and impala roam the lake shores and the forested valley slopes.

The Serengeti National Park is one of world’s greatest game parks. Meaning "endless plains" in the Maasai language, the Serengeti continues to be an ongoing source of inspiration to writers, filmmakers and photographers alike. It is Tanzania’s oldest game reserve and is world-famous for the role it plays in the annual Great Migration, when an estimated two million herbivores - mostly wildebeest - migrate from the Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve. Hundreds of thousands of animals die along the way and the drama of this epic seasonal journey is a gripping, deeply moving experience and a wonderful photographic subject.

The spectacular landscape of the world renowned Ngorongoro Crater has to be seen to be believed. Home to more than 25,000 large mammals, it was once a large volcano that later collapsed and is now the largest intact caldera in the world. It is an area of spectacular beauty and superb game viewing, a truly unique safari destination.

Declared a World Heritage Site, the Selous Game Reserve is a vast region of largely unexplored wilderness teeming with wildlife and with very few roads through its interior, making it one of the most remote parks in Africa. It is also one of the only large game reserves in Tanzania that allows walking safaris, enabling wildlife enthusiasts the chance to explore the African wilderness on foot, arguably one of the best ways to enjoy the natural beauty and diversity of plant life in the area.

Kilimanjaro, the world’s highest standalone mountain is an amazing sight to behold from up close. On a clear day, it can be seen from over 300 km (190 miles) away and its eye-catching, snow-capped peak is usually hidden from view by a blanket of clouds. The trek up the mountain usually takes about five days and routes pass through various habitats, including rain forest and a glacier on top. It is an unforgettable experience to stand on the roof of Africa, over 5 800 m (19,000 feet) above sea level and gaze out over the plains below.

Set among the forested slopes of the Mahale Mountains, the Mahale Mountains National Park was originally created to protect thousands of chimpanzees. It is the scene of fantastic sunsets over Lake Tanganyika, which makes it an essential stop for keen photographers and safari enthusiasts. The habitat combines rain forest, grasslands, alpine bamboo and woodland. Some 50 species of animals have been recorded in the Park, predominant among these being representatives of various monkey and ape families, and over 90 unique species of fish swim in the clear waters of the lake.

Zanzibar is a collection of islands off the coast of Tanzania. The Zanzibar archipelago is set in the Indian Ocean and is made up of the larger islands of Pemba and Unguja (also called Zanzibar Island). Zanzibar is also known as the ’Spice Island’ due to the delicious variety of spices grown there. The island’s capital of Stone Town, a World Heritage Site, boasts a labyrinth of winding alleys, bustling marketplaces, beautifully carved wooden doors, breathtaking mosques and grand Arab residences.
