Indonesia holidays

And a lovely land it is! With some twenty equally beautiful and different scenes, which repeat over and over in astonishing and unpredictable rhythms. One of the lovely views is an almost open plain of rice fields, a few palms and one enormous tree... squatting in a thoroughly primeval fashion in the midst of fragile rice and slender palm stems.

Indonesia holiday experts at WEXAS will tailor-make all aspects of your itinerary to create a Indonesia holiday, personal to you.

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, comprising more than 17,000 islands, two-thirds of which are inhabited. Stretching across the equator for nearly 5,000km, these islands are home to 583 different languages and dialects, and needless to say, some highly diverse cultures and landscapes.

Particular provinces of note are the wild and rugged Sumatra; Sulawesi, for a great diving holiday island, with much to explore on land both for culture and spectacular scenery; mountainous Papua, which is heavily forested and swampy; Nusa Tenggara, for further diving at one of the world’s best coral sites; and the Indonesian part of Borneo, Kalimantan, the third largest island in the world, whose largely uncharted jungles are home to the orang utan.

Java is the country’s heartland, where the majority of the population reside in big cities such as its capital Jakarta. This province is also home to cultural treasures like the massive Hindu temples at Prambanan and Borobudur’s ancient Buddhist temple complex.

Indonesia tailor-made holiday highlights

Java
Borobudur, perched on a hill in central Java, is the largest Buddhist temple complex anywhere and comprises 232 temples - many of which were lost in the jungle until rediscovered by the British in 1815 - their walls decorated with relief carvings. Tengger Caldera boats a strange lunar landscape. The summit of volcano Gunung Bromo provides a splendid pew to view a spectacular sunrise. Exquisite theatre shows featuring shadow puppets retelling ancient epics, like the Ramayana, with beautifully carved silhouettes, can be found across many of the islands, but are particularly fine on Java.

Bali
Savour the rich and enchanting cultural heritage of this beautiful and green Hindu island, which has attracted travellers for centuries, seeking its exotic architecture, religious events and sweeping rice-field terraces. Known as the 'Island of the Gods', it also offers fine sandy beaches, popular among surfers and other watersports enthusiasts. The town of Ubud, in the middle of Bali, is a fascinating centre for art and local handicrafts.

Komodo, Lombok & Flores
In recent years Bali's neighbours have swung increasingly into the spotlight. Lombok is less developed than Bali, has better beaches and, locals proudly note, a bigger volcano. Further east, Komodo and Flores attract adventurous travellers on the trail of the mighty Komodo Dragon (the world's largest lizards at up to 2 metres in length) or in search of world-class diving and hiking.

Sumatra
Orangutans, the russet-furred 'forest men' can be seen in their dense jungle habitats here, as can Sumatran Tigers and Sumatran Rhinoceros.
