Greece holidays

Gradually the magic of the island settled over us as gently and clingingly as pollen. Each day had a tranquillity, a timelessness, about it so that you wished it would never end. But then the dark skin of night would peel off and there would be a fresh day waiting for us, glossy and colourful as a child’s transfer and with the same tinge of unreality.

Greece holiday experts at WEXAS will tailor-make all aspects of your itinerary to create a Greece holiday, personal to you.

Greece, the mainland and its islands, covers a vast range of landscapes and cultural activities. Major historic sites, such as the Parthenon on the Acropolis, are found in Athens and its surrounds, though Greece’s classical heritage is visible just about everywhere, to some degree. The splendour of Delphi stands out as one site not to be missed.

Of its islands, Crete offers the best opportunity for hiking, with walks across its rolling landscape in spring, when fields are covered in lush wildflowers, being a highlight. White and blue villas characterise the Aegean islands, while Mykonos stands out as the party island, with a large gay following.

In the Ionian Sea, Corfu remains the most popular, and is the most developed by way of throbbing nightclubs, but those requiring a more tranquil surround will prefer Kefalonia – though visitors here have increased significantly since Louis de Bernières’ Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Neighbouring Ithaca is still awaiting its tourist boom after the publication of Homer’s Odyssey

Greece tailor-made holiday highlights

Athens
The capital of Greece, and the birthplace of Western civilisation. The 2,400-year-old Parthenon still dominates the skyline from its position on the Acropolis. The Theatre of Dionysus and Odeon of Herodes Atticus are close by, as are many other ancient sites. The flea market in Plaka, narrow streets winding past tavernas and craft shops, is a good area to feel the bustle of Athens that has continued for so long.

Mainland Greece
Delphi is a popular archaelogical site, home to the Oracle, who offered guidance to the rulers of ancient Greece, and the huge Temple of Apollo. In Thessaly, the monasteries of Meteora, built on top of huge pinnacles of smooth rock, are an extraordinary sight, as is Mount Olympus, legendary home of the gods.

Ionian Islands
Ithaca was the setting for The Odyssey, Cefalonia beside it for Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Corfu was made famous by My Family and Other Animals.

Aegean Islands
Not as lush as their Ionian counterparts, but can be just as attractive. Lesbos, the largest of the islands, has beautiful beaches and therapeutic springs.

Cyclades
Bright white buildings with deep blue coloured domed roofs against dramatic black volcanic sand and an impossibly blue sky characterise Santorini. Nearby Mykonos is known for its whitewashed cobbled labyrinth of a town and lively nightlife: especially popular among the international gay community. Take the boat trip to Paradise beach, but stay on the boat, and enjoy the captain call, "Next stop, Super Paradise!"

Sporades Islands
Alonissos, Skiathos, Skyros and Skopelos are charming and unspoilt and the only inhabited islands in this enchanting archipelago.

Crete
Largest of the Greek islands and formerly home of the ancient Minoan civilisation, with important archeological finds at Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys. The charming town of Chania, with its Venetian harbour, is one of many gems.
