A visit to Abu Simbel is an essential part of any trip to Egypt. Situated on the banks of Lake Nasser, this magnificent temple complex is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the country. It consists of twin temples carved from the mountainside built by Ramses II in honour of himself and his wife Nefertari. Sculptures and carvings showing scenes of battle and ritual decorate the interior. During the construction of the High Dam in the 1960s, the temples were moved stone by stone from their original location to save them from the rising waters.
