Barbados holidays

Gigantically tall thin palms, bending with their own lankiness, had been drawn, so it seemed, by a very vulgar and extraordinarily accurate and laborious artist - drawn in Indian ink, on the pale orange expanses of the West.

Aldous Huxley, Beyond the Mexique

Barbados holiday experts at WEXAS will tailor-make all aspects of your itinerary to create a Barbados holiday, personal to you.

Barbados is probably the most developed of all Caribbean islands. While it has amazing white sand beaches fringed with palm fronds these aren’t what set Barbados apart from the rest, as most other islands here are similarly blessed. Instead it is the broad choice available of things to do and places to stay that mark it out from the crowd.

On the eastern, Atlantic-facing, side of the island, beaches and coves are naturally more windswept, while the south and west coasts are sheltered. Its not surprising then, that these latter areas are more built up and home to the majority of luxury hotels and retreats. You’ll need to get away from here to find the real Barbados and Bajan culture though. Head inland to explore the limestone hills and verdant foliage and westward for windsurfing, hiking and diving. You’ll also need to make time to visit old plantation homes and botanical gardens, and to discover true calypso rhythms and real Bajan rums.

Barbados tailor-made holiday highlights

Bridgetown
Busy commercial hub and capital, a mish-mash of modern and colonial buildings. The city has an English feel, with a miniature of London's Trafalgar Square - complete with a statue of Lord Nelson. It's small and easily walkable. Sights include the Government House, the Barbados Museum, St Michael's Cathedral and a distinctive Old Synagogue. Temple Yard has a Rastafarian street market.

Holetown
Founded in the 1620s, this is the oldest town in Barbados and several buildings from this early period remain. A narrow beach off Folkestone Park is a pleasant spot for picnics, swimming and surfing.

St Lawrence
One of a cluster of low-key towns on the southwest coast of the island, noted for powdery white sand, interesting local crafts and places to eat and drink.

Barbados Wildlife Reserve
A walk-through zoo featuring an array of green monkeys, red-footed turtles, caimans, brocket deer, iguanas and agoutis. Animals roam freely through the lush mahogany forest.

Watersports
The island's splendid coral reefs offer excellent scuba diving and snorkelling. Sea-horses, frogfish and hawksbill turtles can be spotted. Carlisle Bay, near Bridgetown, has 200 wrecks to explore. Windsurfing and surfing are also popular activities.

Sunbury plantation house
Offers an insight into the sugar trade, which was vital to the island during colonial times.
