Australia Rail Journeys

THE GHAN

The Ghan is an icon of Australian travel, a passenger train running from Darwin to Adelaide (or vice versa) via Alice Springs, through the wilderness of Australia’s Outback. Taking its name from the Afghan Cameleers who carried supplies to remote telegraph stations, the train first departed Adelaide some 80 years ago, bound for Alice Springs, with the line extension to Darwin becoming operational in 2004.
