Kangaroo Island Expedition
Tuesday 20 April 2010
Australian Southern Ocean Lodge has joined forces with a renowned naturalist to launch once-yearly, seven-night expeditions to Kangaroo Island.
The first exclusive annual expedition will take place 24-31 July and be led by naturalist Craig Wickham who has more than 20 years’ experience running personalised small group natural history tours on Kangaroo Island.
Highlights of the tour will include visiting Seal Bay, home to Australia’s third largest colony of Australian Sea Lions; seeing Admiral’s Arch, home to over 50,000 Australian and New Zealand fur seals; wandering among Cape Barren Geese; a nocturnal tour of Hanson Bay Sanctuary to see koalas during their wakeful period; and a coastal cruise to view seabirds, penguins, sea eagles, albatross, pelicans and dolphins.
The Kangaroo Island Expedition is being organised by James and Hayley Baillie, who run the award-winning eco-wilderness Southern Ocean Lodge as well as the Capella Lodge on Lord Howe Island.
The couple said the unique voyage would be well-timed and filled with exceptional guided experiences, first-hand wildlife encounters, education and plenty of exploration, with a number of lectures from world-leading authorities.
"We’ve chosen July as the ideal time for an expedition as daytime temperatures are perfect for exploring and wildlife is active," they said.
Kangaroo Island is widely regarded as Australia’s Galapagos, and sits a mere 15 km from the shores of mainland South Australia. The Island is 155 km long by 55 km wide and covers some 4,500 sq km.
The Southern Ocean Lodge is open year-round and offers one of Australia’s first true luxury lodge experiences.

Milford Sound is simply stunning : it is a natural wonder of world fame. In Maori legend, the fiords were created not by rivers of ice, but by Tu Te raki Whanoa, a godly figure who came wielding a magical adze and uttering incantations. Whatever the fiords mood, teeming with rain or with sun glistening on deep water, it will inspire you. The fiords sides rise vertically from the dark waters, mountain peaks scrape the sky and waterfalls cascade down precipitous cliffs. In the foreground of the fiord stands Mitre Peak, a remarkable presence dominating the skyline, and probably one of the most photographed images of New Zealand : and definitely one for your own album.

Why do the readers of countless uk travel magazines continue to name New Zealand as their number one holiday destination? Probably because, despite its size, The Land of the Long White Cloud punches well above its weight. To travel through South Island is like a fun-filled lesson in geography: towering mountains blanketed in snow and rainforest, turquoise lakes, ice-age glaciers and vast swathes of sand without a single set of footprints. From top to toe – that is, from the world-renowned wineries of Marlborough to the deep waters, tall peaks and crashing waterfalls of Fiordland National Park – it cannot help but enliven the senses. North Island may hold less aesthetic appeal, but with its winterless north, vast thermal plateau and dramatic displays of Maori culture, you’d be mad not to pay it its dues. The fact that all this is packed into an area barely larger than Britain means everything is easily accessible – perfect for
